Shan Womens Action Network

SWAN
SWAN was formed in North Thailand in 1999 by Shan women to fight for gender equality and justice in their struggle for political and social change in Burma. One of SWAN’s main achievements has been to expose the systematic use of sexual violence by the Burmese military regime. Their report “License to Rape” gained significant international media attention, and enabled SWAN to link with many international networks to advocate on human rights issues.
SWAN has been awarded £3,000 for their Internship Programme which provides skills training for 3 to 5 young women annually. This helps to strengthen the organisational capacity of SWAN by ensuring they have adequate numbers of skilled staff to implement their programmes.
