Practical Action

44893-wind-girls-140Practical Action is an international development charity with a difference.  They work with some of the world’s poorest women, men and children, helping alleviate poverty in the developing world, through the innovative use of small-scale technology.

Their poverty alleviation work currently comprises some 140 projects and has enabled over 900,000 to improve their lives in the last year alone.

One project ‘Arsenic in Water’ focuses on the need for a cheap, accurate sensor for detecting arsenic in water.  In the short term, these workshops will capture the real needs of the communities affected by arsenic in drinking water, together with the needs of the major agencies (such as UNICEF) for improvements needed to the current systems of arsenic sensing.  In the long term, the project aims to develop a sensor device that meets these needs including the important cost and sustainability criteria.

Our funding of £1,900 goes towards this project.
