Sustainable Development International – POM354
POM354 aims to facilitate the redevelopment, expansion and modernisation of key agricultural value chains in Afghanistan with the intent to provide Afghan farmers with sustainable alternatives to growing poppies (opium). Pomegranates will take centre stage in this effort, as Afghan farmers have cultivated pomegranates for thousands of years and the local varieties are widely known for their excellence.
POM54 recently started an expansive planting programme, aiming to plant 58 million pomegranate trees over the next ten years.
To date, the project has established a firm commitment from farmers, Tribal Elders and regional authorities in Afghanistan. Over 22,000 farmers responded positively and are ready to join POM354.
Our funding of £18,735 over 2 years goes to cover running costs.
