Stop this bloody trade NOW
Following a message from Will Travers of the Born Free Foundation, we wanted to update you all and ask for two minutes of your time to stop this bloody trade NOW.
Please take a look at www.bloodyivory.org and if you feel as strongly about this as we do, please sign-up by clicking Reject the Ivory Trade and make sure your voice is heard in the Bloody Ivory debate.
The facts are stark:
- 36,000 elephants were killed last year for their ivory.
- Over 20,000 kilos of illegal ivory was confiscated in 2009 which means possible 100 tonnes or more.
- The price of raw ivory has now topped £1,000 a kilo in the Far East, according to trade experts.
- Poaching in Kenya has gone up 400% since 2007.
- Zakouma National Park in Tchad has lost 85% of its elephants in four years.
- Conservationists on the ground report that Zimbabwe may have lost 6,000 elephants in 2009.
Press reports indicate that Selous Reserve in Tanzania is losing 50 elephants a month to poachers.
Now Tanzania and Zambia want to trade 111 tonnes of ivory at the CITES Conference in less than three weeks time (that’s nearly a quarter of a million pounds of ivory) and thereby add fuel to the fire of the ivory trade.
Please spread the word. If you have Twitter or Facebook then send a note to everyone to ask them to go www.bloodyivory.org and make their voice heard. Ask your friends to contact their friends and so on and on.
There is no time to lose! The CITES meeting is just 17 days away (starts March 13th).
Thank you on behalf of elephants everywhere.
