Introducing another remarkable volunteer; Sandy Tompkins

neuse-river-cleanup_sandytompkins-w-dumbbells1Yes, gather around all, its that time again – time to recognise and set off a rocket of recognition across the sky for one of our USA volunteers; Sandy Tompkins.

Sandy, like so many of our USA volunteers, works at our Wake Forest Head Office in Rayleigh Durham, North Carolina.  Sandy is one of our many lovely volunteers who help and assist with the onsite charity shop, all profits of which go towards small groups and projects across the USA.

By day – like so many superheros – Sandy is a Replenishment Analyst for the Commercial Team but after hours, Sandy springs into life as ‘Enviro Girl’, determined to help clear up her local community.

Sandy and her partner fighting grime, Rick Burnett,  recently participated in the Neuse River Clean Up on Saturday 2nd April.  This river clean is in its 9th year and was originally set up to protect, restore and preserve the Neuse River basin through education, advocacy and enforcement, to provide clean water for drinking, recreation and enjoyment to the communities it servces.  For more information on this, please visit their website at http://www.neuseriver.org/events/neuserivercleanup.html

Sandy and Rick pulled on their rain boots and started the day picking up trash from the banks of the river, their most unusual find being a pair of bar bells!!  They ended the day by pulling trash from the river and were absolutely stunned by the amount of tires found in there.

Recycling has now become a very important part of this clean up; in the past everything collected from the banks and bed of the Neuse was taken away.  This year, they took the positive impact of this clean up further by seperating items for recycling and preventing the found trash going to landfills – excellent stuff guys!neuse-river-cleanup_rick-burnett_small

Sandy and Rick – we’re think you are great!  Long live Enviro Girl and Captain Recycle we say!
