Sahara Challenge 2012 : meet the trekkers

Over the past 5 months, we’ve been bowled over by the support that our 30 intrepid trekkers have received for the Sahara Challenge 2012. Massive thanks to EVERYONE who has helped, donated or assisted in whatever way – you’ve all been incredible.

We’re humbled by how much help and support there has been: to all at The Body Shop International, the suppliers of the company, all the staff, departments, team and all the trekkers friends and families – a heartfelt thanks.

Update: Girls in the Game

Girls in the Game has been providing direct service programming for 16 years, with a multitude of programs to keep girls involved year-round and from childhood through their teen years.

By exposing girls to a varied mix of health, fitness and leadership opportunities, Girls in the Game aims to not only provide physical activity and health education programming, but also to give girls leadership development opportunities to improve their confidence and help them grow up happy and strong.

Update : Polaris Project

The Polaris Project’s mission is to combat human trafficking and modern-day slavery and to strengthen the anti-trafficking movement through a comprehensive approach.

We gave them funding of £5,000 through our Americas Zone Programme towards the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Programme.

Animals Lebanon works to protect animals through education, legislation and direct action.

Animals Lebanon believes that we can make a better place for humans and animals. They believe in focusing on preventing problems before they start through wide scale TNR, which stands for ‘Trap, Neuter, Return’.

AWECA Foundation, Incorporated (AFI) is a non-government organization serving as a catalyst to promote an ecologically balanced environment.

They provide resources and basic services to needy children, youth, women and indigenous peoples from marginalized areas in the Philippines.

AWECA Foundation have been awarded £5,065 through the Asia Pacific Zone Funding Panel for The School Caravan: Water for Life Project.

As Douglas Adams so charmingly put it “Man has always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much…the wheel, New York, wars and so on..while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man….for precisely the same reason”

We funded APCM £3,072.49 through our EMEA funding programme this year towards their research programme ‘Cetacea Central’, dedicated to the study and conservation of whales and dolphins in Portugal.

The Gorilla Organization

he Gorilla Organization’s mission is to protect the world’s few remaining gorillas in the wild through a groundbreaking programme of conservation, socio-economic development and environmental education.

With fewer than 790 mountain gorillas and 3,000 eastern lowland gorillas left, these magnificent apes are facing extinction through habitat loss, poaching, war and disease.

Although the Gorilla Organization initially concentrated on traditional conservation methods, such as law enforcement, in the mid 1990s it began to expand its programme toincorporate capacity-building and poverty reduction initiatives in communities alongside the gorilla habitat.

One of the greatest threats to the gorilla population’s survival is habitat destruction, caused largely by the production of charcoal and use of firewood collected from the national parks.

The impoverished towns and villages surrounding the Virunga National Park in eastern DR Congo are densely populated, with the majority of households practicingsubsistence farming and lacking basic amenities, including electricity. Families are therefore reliant on charcoal and firewood, used extensively for cooking and heating.

The Gorilla Organization is implementing a fuel-efficient stoves project alongside a local partner. Fuel-efficient stoves reduce the use of charcoal and firewood by approximately 75%, which in turn diminishes human pressure on the gorilla habitat and the loss of DR Congo’s forest cover.

We gave them £10,000 through our Global Grants Programme towards this fuel-efficient stoves project.

International Tree Foundation

The International Tree Foundation plants, protects and promotes awareness with local communities to conserve trees, associated biodiversity and indigenous forestry.

They also work to alleviate poverty through sustainable use of forests and forest products.

The projects they primarily support involve planting trees that provide food and income for local people; in many cases, this also addresses environmental issues such as habitat restoration. There are often fundamental rights issues involved such as acess to ancestral land.

We gave them £10,000 through our Global Grants Programme for the project called ‘Conserving high biodiversity forests in the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania’. The Udzungaw Mountains are part of the National Park and form one of 34 biodiversity hotspots and one of 200 WWF eco-regions of global critical importance.

Street Child Africa

Street Child Africa (SCA) is a charity that has proven itself small enough to be flexible, but big enough to make a difference.

In the last 13 years, it has raised over £6 million for projects serving street children and other ‘at risk’ youth.

Its mission is to champion the rights of African street children and other children at risk by listening to them and supporting quality services that address their needs and fulfill their aspirations. Its work seeks to strengthen the impact of its partner organisations through funding, training and advice, create strong local African networks and raise awareness both in the UK and overseas.

We gave them £20,000 through the Global Grants Programme for Functional Literacy, Skills Training and Start-up Businesses for Street Girls in Accra, Ghana.
