I have been reading a book about CSR related activities titled ”Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility-Stakeholders in a Global Environment” by William B. Werther,JR. & David Chandler. There is an interesting argument about the Body Shop that attracted my attention: ”Although the Body Shop may not itself test on animals, it is benefiting from the knowledge gained by others who have previously tested on animal” p.123
In that respect the company’s claims of innocence is regarded as misleading to some extent according to the author.
Likewise, concerning the issue of helping animals: ”Although the Body Shop maintains that they are against animal testing, they do not always make clear that many of the ingredients in their products have been tested on animals by other companies causing much pain and suffering in those animals . The Body Shop accepts ingredients tested on animals before 1991 or those tested since then (if they were animal tested for some purpose other than cosmetics). There continue to be concerns about the enforcement of their policy. Also, some Body Shop items contain animal products such as gelatina (crushed bone)”. p.123
I am really curious about any explanation to these arguments.
